My first year

Painting furniture has been the perfect hobby/obsession for me.  I retired from teaching at the end of January 2013 and plunged right into painting. I had first read about Annie Sloan chalk paint in a newspaper article that featured Katrina Barclay who owns Malenka Originals.  Here is a look back, more or less in order, at the things that I have painted.  It’s pretty obvious that I like colour.

Waterfall Dressers: The first one is Barcelona Orange, the second is a peacock blue that was a mix of Napoleon Blue and Aubusson.  I later repainted it in the 3rd photo.

I have also done a few custom pieces and various chairs and small tables which I haven’t included in this post.  It has been a very busy retirement so far.

  1. I just retired December 1st with the intention of doing exactly what you are doing. I have a garage full of great estate sale finds just waiting for the holidays to end. Thank you for the inspiration. I hope my look back at my first year is as colorful and prolific as yours!

  2. Love your work! I have been updating furniture with paint and upholstery for a while now but I just started blogging in September 2013. I’m a retired college professor and love keeping busy. I have a waterfall nightstand I need to do and your waterfall items have given me some inspiration! I too am Canadian and enjoy “meeting” other Canadian bloggers. Have a great 2014!
(BTW Where you you sell your pieces? Booth or shop?)

    • Hi, Joan. We’ve met online before but I couldn’t tell from your comment if you remembered. Sadly, I would love to have some place to sell my stuff but there is no place to have a booth that I could afford and there are no consignment shops that deal in such furniture or at least not that I have discovered. I sell it all through Craigslist or Kijiji. That sometimes takes awhile but almost all of it has sold. It’s funny that you should mention Waterfalls. I wrote a post on that style in March and it is by far my most viewed piece with almost 3000 views. It brings daily visitors to my blog. I can only conclude that there are a lot of people who are thinking of painting one and want to know something about it. I have read most of your posts and really liked that little MCM night stand. I bet it sold quickly.

  3. Wow! You have gotten a ton of work done!! Thank you for sharing. You are one of the fan favorites at the Sunday Showcase from the Make it Pretty Monday party at The Dedicated House. Pop on over after 8am cst to see your feature. Hope to see your prettiness again tomorrow at the bash! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse
